There are many different things that can cause damage to fibreglass matting, and therefore producing problems with your flat roof. Generally damage can occur due to poor workmanship, but can also be a result of Mother Nature.
Below are a few different reasons why fiberglass matting can become damaged:
Weather – extreme weather conditions such as lightening, can cause cracks to appear on a flat roof, which in turn eventually damaging the fibreglass matting.
Incorrectly taped boards – If boards aren’t taped properly, cracks can occur, which may then cause damage to the matting, as it allows water to penetrate gaps.
Falling objects – If you have foliage, or branches surrounding the area, these can snap from the trunk of the tree, and fall on roof. This could cause damage to the fibreglass.
Fire – If you were unfortunate enough to have a fire, this would obliviously cause serious damage to the fibreglass matting, which would then need replacing.
If any of the above examples were to occur, certain products such as cromapol can help to prevent, and protect your roof from leaking. Products like these are perfect for do it yourselfers, as they are extremely simple to use. It is however important to understand that products such as cromapol won’t repair the matting, but will make your roof water tight in the short term, until the roof can be re-fibreglassed.
Tissue Matting – If you have cracks in the fiberglass, but they are quite small, you can remove the layer of topcoat, cut a layer of tissue matting, and place on top of original matting, add resin and finish with topcoat. Tissue matting will prevent further damage occurring by preventing leaks.
To summaries, affectively fibreglass matting isn’t repairable if damaged, but the roof as a whole is repairable which will prevent further damage occuring. On a large roof patching up can be completed if problems were to occur, by using the above products, or by removing the affected area, and re- fibreglassing. If the roof in question is not of a big size, it would be advisable to completely renovate the whole roof, rather than just the affected area.
If you are renewing a whole roof, it is always advisable to seek professional advice, so please feel free to contact one of the team at Speedy Plastics and Resins, and we will be happy to help.
