5 Fantastic 'Father and Son' DIY Projects for Father's Day

With Father's Day just around the corner (the 15th June for some of you less eagle-eyed sons), our thoughts naturally turn to the little men.

And if you're looking for a little male bonding with your son on the one day he's obligated to enjoy your company, we think there's nothing quite like a good DIY session. Here are five great ideas:

1 – Make your own soap box derby

Let's face it, soap box derbies are one of the best things about being a kid. So why not build your own cart? How hard you want to work depends on your preference: you could buy your own kart and 'soup' it up from there, or you could build one entirely from scratch. Either

way, you'll enjoy a great DIY session that your son's sure to never forget. You can use old materials from round the house or tucked away in the garden from the old guttering to old fence panels.

2 – Paint his room

Admittedly, it was pretty cool when you did up your son's room a couple of years ago, but those designs are, like, 'so' 2011. So get down to a DIY superstore and pick his favourite colour before giving his bedroom a fresh, stylish lick of paint.

3 – Create a cool garden

Could your garden do with a bit of a revamp? If your son is obsessed with the great outdoors, you could both hone your DIY skills and welcome some wildlife into your garden in one fell swoop. It's fun and easy to make your own bird box or welcome frogs in with a fun amphibious cottage from balsa wood.

Or you could add a little musicality to the garden by crafting some homemade wind chimes to hang outside.

4 – BYO BBQ

There's nothing we Brits love more than a summer barbecue, and building your own is as simple as it is fun. All you need is a load of bricks and some cement mixture and you can teach your lad about how to build walls – while we're sure he'll like the tasty end result too.

5 – Build a boat

You could opt to create a tiny 1-foot replica model to float on the pond, or elect for a slightly trickier man-size vessel, but there are few activities out there manlier than building your own boat. Carving wood, sticking slabs together and learning about physics: what's not to like?
