How are you using your garden shed? Do you chuck stuff in or are you organised? Chances are you could be getting a lot more use out of your shed than you are at the moment, and this doesn’t have to be a difficult process. In fact some basic DIY skills can drastically increase the usefulness of your shed, here’s how:
Maintain it
A leaky shed is a pointless shed. Make sure you give it a frequent coat of roof resin to keep it waterproof and carry out general maintenance to stop it from falling apart. This will help to protect everything in the shed from being damaged by the elements and also keep your shed looking nice. Doing this once a year can help to prevent water damage and rust on your garden tools, saving you lots of money on replacing these utensils.
If you have a wooden shed, then giving it a layer or two of staining resin you can make it much more durable for wet weather conditions. A wide range of stain colours are available which will help make your shed look great, as well as it being more protected from the elements.
Organise it
If you’re just chucking bits and pieces into the shed then you’re probably wasting a lot of valuable space. By sorting out all the clutter, throwing away rubbish and making sure that everything is in an orderly fashion you can get much more in there. In addition to being able to fit more in, you’ll also be able to find the things you need straight away.
Utilize Wall Space
If you haven’t already, stick shelves and hooks up on the wall to keep smaller items or tools out of the way. This is a great way of keeping the shed floor clear for bigger items like lawnmowers. Another great trick is to put wall mounted storage units in the shed, as this can drastically increase the total amount of room you have.
A Place for your Tools
Use specifically mounted holders for things like shovels, rakes, hoes etc. as this will help to remove items from the clutter. These types of tools are the most frequently used items in any shed and therefore quick easy access can help when gardening. If you have lots of tools then it may be worth looking into alternative storage solutions to help cut down on the space it takes up. [source]
Move the Shed
Sheds that are close to trees and bushes can be affected by damp and are prone to rotting. Make sure that it is at least 3 feet away from anything else to give it the best chance of drying out. This can be difficult in many gardens, but having the shed in an area of the garden that receives sunlight can help to dry it out and fight off the effects of damp.
