Do you hate throwing things away? We do too! Why simply scrap something and send it to rot away in a landfill when you can get more use

out of it? Something you may not have thought about is using your old guttering for other purposes, here are some clever ideas to get you

started:

Put it on Your Shed

If you haven’t already got guttering on your shed then this is a perfect time to start! By sticking your old gutters onto a garden shed and having those draining into a water butt you get a supply of water that’s ideal for use around the garden. You can water flower beds, clean muddy wellies and keep the grass lush and green throughout the summer. This could save you a bit of money off your annual water bill as you won’t have to use your outside tap as much.

Shelves

By adding a lick of paint to your gutters and fixing them to interior walls, you can create some amazing shelves that are brilliant for light objects like children’s books, cleaning products and crafts. There are many possibilities when it comes to indoor shelving – you could even make a handy shoe storage tray perfect for wet shoes.

Liven up your Fish Tank

Feeling really creative? Why don’t you create an aqueduct from one fish tank to the next! This will require quite a good standard of DIY knowledge, but when done right your fish will be able to swim from one tank to the next and enjoy much greater freedom. If this is out of your league then why don’t you cut the guttering down into smaller pieces and put it upside-down in the tank, creating tunnels and caves for your fish.

Grow Plants

Gutters are the perfect size for window box planters or even starting a space saving herb garden. Simply fill your old gutters up with dirt and add the seeds and plants you want to grow. You can either mount these directly to a wall/ windowsill or store them neatly in a greenhouse – it can be a huge space saver! The best thing about using guttering as plant pots is that you can lift them off the floor, maximising your planting area.

Food trough

Whether you have chickens or cats or dogs, you can repurpose your old gutters as food troughs. These are especially useful if you have multiple animals as it can take up much less room than bowls and can be kept off the floor. High sided guttering can also be much less messy than food bowls, with less overspill and an easy wipe-clean surface.
